Islamic Thought in the CIS Countries: Globality and Locality

September 1-6, 2020

Due to the global pandemic, dates for the following program will change.
Please check back regularly for updates.

During the past two decades, many discussions among the Muslim scholars and academics were concerned with the development of Islamic intellectual tradition, starting from the reconsideration of the primary sources and finishing with the Islamic learning. Since many of these discussions were concentrated over the issue of “traditionalism” in Islam and its relation to the global Muslim community as well as to the local forms of Islamic representation, the next important question appears: how domestic Muslim interpretation in the CIS countries can benefit from the global Islamic developments? And in which way the local narratives can be transferred globally for the common good of Muslim societies? How to build Muslim intellectual tradition in CIS area, promoting long-standing perspectives of the integration of knowledge paradigm?

We encourage the participants to send proposals covering one of the following themes:

  • Islamic intellectual history in the region;
  • Contemporary Islamic thought in the CIS countries;
  • Future of Islamic learning and thought in the region;
  • Most important trends in Islamic intellectual culture;
  • Muslim intellectuals and their role in promotion of knowledge culture.
