On Thursday, August 1, 2019, three members of the AEMS research team, Dr. Ilham Nasser (Senior Researcher and Director of Pedagogy), Dr. Maryam Saroughi (Researcher), and Amina Derbi (Executive Analyst), visited the All Dulles Area Muslim Societies (ADAMS) Center after receiving an invitation from Sister Sanober Yacoob, Principal of ADAMS Radiant Hearts Academy and Taleem Ul-Quran Summer Camp. The team presented the study of “Mapping the Terrain and its implications for socioemotional education as a follow up to the Teacher Training and Enrichment Program (TTEP) which was offered in 2018-19 at IIIT. Sister Sanober presented the school-wide policy implementation of socioemotional education and ways it is utilized in the Taleem Ul-Quran Summer Camp this summer. She announced that Radiant Hearts Academy would be adopting this policy as part of the curriculum during the upcoming school year as a direct result of the beneficial TTEP program offered by IIIT. Other presenters included Taleem Ul-Quran Summer Camp teachers and the audience included a mixture of Taleem Ul-Quran Summer Camp as well as Radiant Hearts Academy teachers.

Several teachers presented their lessons on increasing learners’ self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. They also discussed various teaching strategies including modeling, feeling sharing during circle-time, writing kind notes to other students, and art and craft activities to show how happy feelings and actions positively impact one’s heart. A common theme between presentations was the 3H’s of Hand, Head, and Heart being emphasized. The AEMS team provided some commentary for teachers on their presentations and the AEMS team sincerely thanked Sister Sanober and the teachers for the kind invitation. The AEMS team will continue to coordinate with ADAMS Center as the Radiant Hearts Academy implements its schoolwide socioemotional education policy this coming school year.
