Turkey and Bosnia & Herzegovina Summer Students Discuss Renewal in Islamic Thought
Ermin Sinanovic, IIIT’s Director of Research, recently traveled to Turkey and Bosnia where he and other instructors taught at IIIT’s summer schools. IIIT summer school in Turkey brought together about 20 students from Turkey and neighboring countries. Sinanovic spoke to them about the need for intellectual renewal in contemporary Islamic thought.

The students learned about the efforts done by IIIT in bringing about such a renewal. Specifically, they deliberated on the need to develop a new methodology for dealing with the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the Islamic heritage.

IIIT’s summer school in Bosnia and Herzegovina was attended by 28 students from all over Europe. Students hailed from various backgrounds and disciplines in humanities, social sciences, engineering, and medicine. They were taught and discussed intellectual renewal and social reform, contemporary Islamic thought, Islamic revival, and Salafism. By being introduced to various categories in the study of contemporary Islamic thought, the students were engaged in a wide-ranging discussion on issues relevant to modern Muslim experience in Europe.
