Dr. Ilham Nasser and Ms. Saulat Pervez participated in the 59th Annual ISNA Convention in Chicago on behalf of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). Dr. Nasser delivered a presentation titled, “Advancing Education in Muslim Societies: An Initiative for Transformation” on Sept. 4, 2022. Dr. Nasser is a Senior Researcher and Director of the Human Development Program at the Advancing Education in Muslim Societies (AEMS) initiative of IIIT. The session was moderated by Sufia Azmat, Executive Director of Council of Islamic Schools in North America (CISNA).
Dr. Nasser shared reflections and lessons learned based on AEMS’ three-year empirical research – Mapping the Terrain – to advance education and change in Muslim societies. She highlighted the research process and addressed the benefits and challenges of field-based surveying as well as the outreach activities that followed to promote education and human development. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session that focused on the implication of research with reference to Muslim societies, curriculum, and pedagogy.
A IIIT publications booth was set up in the room which enabled audience members to view and explore IIIT books at the end of the session.
