IIIT and Saint Petersburg State University Explore Future Collaboration
On June 25, 2019, the Department of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Asian and African Studies at Saint Petersburg State University conducted a workshop attended by Prof. Oleg Redkin, Head of the Department of Arabic Philology; Dr. Olga Bernikova, Deputy Head of the Department of Arabic Philology, and Prof. Alexander Knysh, Head of the Islamic Studies Laboratory and Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan, Department of Near Eastern Studies.
The workshop was attended by a group of professors from the department and post-secondary students, with the participation of Dr. Beddy Ebnou, Director of the Institute for Epistemological Studies, Dr. Khaled Abu Nahleh, Director of the Comprehensive Knowledge Institute, and Dr. Haggag Ali.
The discussion revolved around the significance of Dr. Haggag Ali’s book Mapping the Secular Mind, which was published by the International Institute of Islamic Thought, London office. The book was published under the supervision of the Department of Arabic Language and Philology and the Islamic Studies Laboratory; its translation was begun and supervised at this university.
In addition to discussing the book, the workshop was intended to explore future cooperation in various fields, whether through cultivating research academies or exploring the possibility of starting a summer school in June 2020 in cooperation with the Department of Arabic Language and the Islamic Studies Laboratory. The summer school is intended for students who have graduated from universities and Islamic studies institutes in Russia or graduates of colleges of humanities and social scientists, as well as young students of African and Asian studies who are interested in studying the Qur’an, the Prophetic Hadith, and Islamic philosophy.
Saint Petersburg University – founded in 1724- is the oldest and most prestigious university in Russia.
