Collaboration between IIIT and Fiqh Council of North America
The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. The two organizations agreed to collaborate on issues relevant to the Muslim American community.
The MoU affirmed IIIT’s appreciation of FCNA’s mission and its willingness to support FCNA in achieving these objectives as related to IIIT’s research agenda, policies, and procedures. It also named Dr. Zainab Alwani as the lead person in “communication and coordination of all projects and work of FCNA with IIIT.”
IIIT acknowledged that it is not a fatwa-issuing body but it is committed to providing research and recommendations on contemporary issues and submit them to FCNA. FCNA, in turn, agreed to have some of their issue-specific meetings at IIIT, for which IIIT agreed to provide management as well as financial support.
IIIT will be hosting Fiqh Fora from time to time and looks forward to the “participation of members of FCNA in the deliberations of the IIIT Fiqh Forum.” IIIT held its very first Fiqh Forum on Organ Donation on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, which was attended by Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, Chairman of FCNA, Dr. Jamal Badawi, Executive Council member of FCNA, as well as Dr. Mohammad Adam El Sheikh, Executive Council member of FCNA. Their presence enabled the signing of the MoU later in the evening at the IIIT office.
“Since IIIT is not in the business of issuing fatwas, it’s good to have educational events like the Fiqh Forum, and FCNA will continue in bringing specifics,” Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi remarked.
“We will be enriched by concerted efforts,” said Dr. Abubaker Al-Shingieti, Executive Director of IIIT. “We complement each other.”
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Hisham Altalib, President of IIIT, Dr. Ermin Sinanović, Director of Research and Academic Programs, Obay Altaleb, Director of Marketing, Saber AlKilany, Director of Library, and Dr. Jasser Auda, a new member of FCNA. It took place in the IIIT Board Room.
