IIIT Al Faruqi Memorial Lecture at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR)
The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) held its annual Al Faruqi Memorial Lecture at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion on Sunday, November 19, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Hadia Mubarak (Queens College Charlotte) moderated the session where she spoke about the life and legacy of Prof. Al Faruqi and introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Deina Abdelkader (University of Massachusetts Lowell), who delivered a talk titled, “Knowledge and Power: Hegemonic Research Methods and The Neo-Orientalist Discourse.” Dr. Abdelkader critiqued the existing depictions and descriptions of Muslims in both history and political science disciplines and called for subverting the dominant narratives, in line with the scholarship of Prof. Al Faruqi as well as Shaykh Taha Al-Alwani and Dr. Mona Abdul Fadl. The lecture was followed by an interactive Question and Answer session.
