Al-Alwani & al Faruqi Libraries

The Taha Jabir Al-Alwani and the Ismail al Faruqi Libraries of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) provide students, faculty, and researchers with a rich resource of over 100,000 volumes focused primarily around Islamic Studies, Comparative Religion, Islamic History, Arabic Language, and Social Studies. The reference collection includes electronically-stored collections of Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, Hadith, Islamic History, Education, Advancing Education in the Muslim Societies (AEMS), Quran, Tafsir, and the Encyclopedia of Islam, as well as biographies.

The libraries have been established by two of IIIT’s founders, Dr. Ismail al-Faruqi and Dr. Taha Jabir Al-Alwani, who donated their personal libraries.

Cataloging

Both libraries use the Library of Congress system of cataloging and database search and have the capacity to conduct searches for volumes in English and Arabic transliteration using the Library of Congress Arabic Romanization Table. The Libraries are designed for research and academic use. Library users visiting the Libraries can use the new cataloging system, which will search more than 1,000 library databases to locate a book in North America.

Consortium Membership

The IIIT libraries are part of the Washington Theological Consortium (WTC), a group of theological schools and partners from various traditional backgrounds cooperating in dialogue, interfaith understanding, and educational partnership. Patrons of the WTC will enjoy full privileges of interlibrary loans. Members of the Consortium are:
