IIIT Al Faruqi Memorial Lecture and Reception at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR)
The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) held its annual Al Faruqi Memorial Lecture and Reception at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) on Saturday, November 23, 2024, in San Diego, California.
Dr. Zaid Adhami (Williams College) moderated the lecture. He spoke about the life and legacy of Prof. Al Faruqi and introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Hatem Bazian (University of California Berkeley), who delivered a talk titled, “Palestine from Columbus’ Crusade to Herzl’s Zionism and Settler Colonialism.” Dr. Bazian challenged dominant narratives of the history of colonial rule in Palestine and traced its trajectory all the way back to Columbus’ aspirations for retaking Jerusalem and subsequent European and American expansionism shaped by supremacist ideologies. The lecture was followed by an interactive Question and Answer session.
