Mapping the Terrain Update
“Mapping the Terrain” study, launched in July 2018, in countries around the Globe where Muslim communities reside, highlighted the importance of the whole person in the education process and focused on values and constructs that are authentic to Muslim societies including empathy, moral reasoning and forgiveness. Surveys distributed included questions addressing youth and university students’ willingness and abilities to agree or disagree with behaviors such as “It upsets me to see someone being treated disrespectfully” , “ I help others even when there is no direct benefit to me”, and “I can relinquish my material goods in favor of the common good”. These same questions were also surveyed among administrators and teachers in K-12 schools.
Data has been arriving from some sites and our research team is busy setting up data entry and organization to begin the analysis and send the reports back to our partners in the different locations. The partners in turn will interpret the results and present those at a regional conference to be held in Istanbul in April 2019.
