Group Discussion on Use of Unlicensed Software

Group Discussion on Use of Unlicensed Software

The September edition of IIITN’s monthly group discussion took place on September 15, 2019. The intellectual gathering was held at the Abubakar Rasheed Conference Hall, Faculty of Sciences, Bayero University, Kano in Nigeria. Dr. Bala Ibrahim Sambo, an associate professor in the Department of Education, School of Continuing Education, Bayero University, Kano presented a paper titled “Effects of Using Copyrighted Software Applications Without Licenses on Muslim Software Applications Users”.

Fifty three participants attended the event which was chaired by the IIITN coordinator Professor Salisu Shehu. He outlined some points which guided the subsequent discussions as well as triggered some questions which the gathering used as a template while making their inputs.

The main theme of presentation was the illegal use of software applications. Dr. Sambo had administered one hundred survey instruments to students and lecturers of different academic units at Bayero University, Kano.  After using this empirical method of research, he concluded that there was a general lack of awareness of an Islamic viewpoint on the legal status of piracy of software and misuse of computer applications.

The presentation was rigorously discussed by Dr. Salahuddin Yusuf of the Federal College of Education, Kano and Malam Sa’idu Sulaiman of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano respectively.  Both the discussants commended the writer for his effort to come up with this timely and very relevant topic.

Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and make invaluable comments and rich observations. The group discussion proved fruitful, interesting, beneficial and academically engaging.
