Scholars Discuss Hadith at IIIT’s Summer Institute
The Scholars Summer Institute is winding down this week with continued seminar events until Thursday, August 14. The theme of seminars since the end of July has been Hadith studies with a number of scholars presenting papers and engaging in vigorous discussions. Some of the scholars in this part of the program have included, among others, Dr. Aisha Musa, Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub, Omer Awass, Dr. Farhan Chak, Dr. Zahid Bukhari and Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad. Some other scholars during earlier part of the program have included Dr. Heba Musharraf, Dr. Muhammad Shafiq, Dr. Anwar Haddam and Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan.
 
As before, summer interns attending their own full load of classes have also attended some of the seminars in the Scholars Summers Institute. All in all, this has been an intense learning experience for them.

Former Indian Parliamentarian Syed Shahabuddin Visits IIIT
It is noteworthy that parts of India ruled by Muslim rulers in centuries past have a smaller concentration of Muslims today than area not ruled by Muslim rulers, so said Mr. Syed Shahabuddin, a veteran Muslim diplomat, politician and strategist in India. He was speaking at a lunch at IIIT on Tuesday, July 22.

Scholars Discuss Qur'an at IIIT's Summer Institute

 

The Qur'an is the theme of the current two-week segment of IIIT's 2008 Scholars' Summer Institute. Lectures by scholars and experts are followed by spirited discussions, leading to ideas for further academic and research initiatives. Lecturers this week have included Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub (Hartford Seminary), Dr. Eltigani Hamid, Dr. Khaleel Mohammed, Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, Dr. Asaad Busool, and Dr. Israr Ahmad Khan.

Lectures and discussions are also attended by IIIT summer interns who are participating in an intensive learning program being held simultaneously with the Scholars' Institute. The theme of the Institute's next two-week session beginning on July 28 will be the Hadith.

 
Paul Scham Discusses Palestinian Israeli Historical Narratives

On June 6, 2008, IIIT hosted Dr. Paul Scham, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute to address the identity-based issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Translated IIIT Books Released

Several IIIT offices are releasing new publications in different languages, in addition to translating existing IIIT publications. IIIT affiliate in Nigeria has released a book titled "The Relevance of Education in our Society" by Haruna Salihi. A new translation of "Madinan Society in the Time of the Prophet - Part 1"  is in Tamil language. "Imam Shatibi's Theory of Higher Objectives of Islamic Law"  by Ahmad al Raysuni has been translated into Urdu, as well as "Objectives of Islamic Law" by Yusuf Alim.


IIIT Announces Summer 2008 Internship Program
The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) is pleased to announce its Summer Internship Program for 2008 which will run for eight weeks between July 1 and August 28, 2008. The program is designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the humanities or social science disciplines and who have an interest in developing their knowledge and research skills in the core areas of Islamic studies such as Quran, Hadith, Fiqh and Islamic History and Civilization beside the study of Arabic language. The first Summer Institute for scholars will take place at IIIT headquarters in Herndon, VA between July 15 and August 15, 2008. The purpose of the Summer Institute is to bring together and engage senior and young scholars with a particular interest or expertise in Qur’anic studies or Sunna in focused, organized discussions of topics related to a contemporary understanding and articulation of issues involving Qur’an and Sunna.
