UK Seminar Addresses Faruqi's Legacy

A two days international seminar on The Legacy of Ismail Al-Faruqi: Thought and Institution was held on 6-7 June 2010 at the University of Westminster in London. The seminar was jointly organized by The Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminister, London, UK, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, USA and the International Institute of Islamic Thought, (IIIT) UK and USA. 

 
A total of  eleven research papers by academics from Malaysia, South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, Algeria were delivered at the seminar. These papers covered topical areas of - Islamization of Knowledge and Ijtihad ; Islamic Humanism, Interreligious Dialogue and Ethics; Study of Religion and Science and Modernity;Tawhid and Aesthetics, being the areas to which Prof. Ismail al Faruqi has made a lasting contribution.
 
The seminar explored al Faruqi's life and his scholarly output by (1) presenting the encyclopedic range of his intellectual pursuits, from philosophy to religion to Islamic studies, and on to history, culture, politics, economics, and science; (2) analyzing the genesis of his ideas and critique of the West’s philosophical and religious traditions, particularly as they relate to Christianity and modernity; and (3) discussing his programmatic approach to the “Islamization of Knowledge” in the form of an institute (IIIT) and his leading efforts to conceptualize and develop contemporary Islamic institutions of higher learning.
 

Dr. AbdulHamid AbuSulayman, President, the International Institute of Islamic Thought – IIIT, and Professor John L. Esposito, University Professor of Religion and International Affairs at Georgetown University, Washington DC., USA delivered key note addresses at the seminar highlighting the great contribution of Prof. Ismail al Faruqi to the academia and the world of Islamic learning. The proceedings of the seminar are to be published in due course.
