The International Institute of Islamic Thought is sad to announce the passing of prominent Arab-American scholar, Dr. George Atiyeh, who headed the Middle East Section of the Library of Congress for 30 years. He passed away on Monday, April 21, 2008, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. IIIT expresses its deep condolences to Dr. Atiyeh’s family and friends. |

IIIT staff and directors, joined by their counterparts at Sterling Management Group, gathered on April 25, 2008 to recognize and thank Mr. Akbar Ali Mir for 20 years of service. Akbar Mir has decided to retire at the end of April and spend time with family and to enjoy his grandchildren. He has worked dedicatedly and diligently with several directors in different departments during the past twenty years, first at Marjac Investments and then at IIIT.

Dr. Shaban Mir, Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University ,will join IIIT in the summer of 2008 as a non-resident Research Fellow. Dr. Mir was awarded a post-doctoral research grant to edit her doctoral dissertation about Muslim women in American university campuses into a book.

 Dr. Jamal Barzinji, Vice-President of IIIT, has been invited to greet and meet His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at a meeting arranged by His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops today April 17th in Washington, D.C. at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. The meeting will include a papal address, followed by greetings from interfaith leaders and the presentation of gifts from members of each community. |

 In its mission to promote quality education, IIIT has purchased land in the Northern Province of Lebanon to establish a much needed university. Last month, Dr. Jamal Barzinji, Vice-President of IIIT, met with his Excellency Mr. Fouad al Sinyora, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, who strongly supports this project. |

Dr. Zaid Abidin Bagir, Director of the Graduate Program at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural studies at Gajah Made University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, delivered a lecture at IIIT headquarters on Thursday April 3, 2008. The lecture was on the transformation of Islamic State Universities in Indonesia. |
