 Ricardo Rene Laremont, Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Binghamton University, SUNY, New York, delivered a lecture at IIIT on Friday, November 13, 2009 which focused on the development of new approaches in the study of Sufi orders globally and in North Africa and the Sahil region, in particular.
Professor Laremont noted the scarcity of recent scholarly writings on Sufi orders in the West, particularly in English. He indicated the need for more current research, especially by Muslim scholars. In terms of new approaches in the study of Sufi orders, he called –as a first step- for a global perspective that would account for the international and transnational nature of many Sufi orders such as the Tijaniyya and their operations in dozens of countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America.

On the evening of Wednesday, November 11, 2009, Al Hiwar Center – a Washington-based organization dedicated to the promotion of dialogue on Middle Eastern issues – organized a panel on Turkey’s new policy toward the Middle East at its offices in Vienna, Virginia.
The conversation was led by Dr. Jamal Barzinji, Vice President of IIIT and Professor Cemil Aydin, IIIT Professor of Islamic Studies and Associate Professor of History at George Mason University.
