The Qur'an is the theme of the current two-week segment of IIIT's 2008 Scholars' Summer Institute. Lectures by scholars and experts are followed by spirited discussions, leading to ideas for further academic and research initiatives. Lecturers this week have included Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub (Hartford Seminary), Dr. Eltigani Hamid, Dr. Khaleel Mohammed, Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, Dr. Asaad Busool, and Dr. Israr Ahmad Khan.
Lectures and discussions are also attended by IIIT summer interns who are participating in an intensive learning program being held simultaneously with the Scholars' Institute. The theme of the Institute's next two-week session beginning on July 28 will be the Hadith.

The first session of the Summer Institute for Scholars Program began its first lecture today. The scholars met at the IIIT library yesterday to introduce themselves and meet the other scholars and IIIT staff and directors.
Today's lecture was presented by Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub, Temple University. This was one of three lectures he will be presenting. This lecture was titled " Quran as Revelation". During the second part of the session Dr. Aisha Musa, Florida International University, presented her talk on "Tafsir al Qur'an bil Qur'an". |

It was a day of excitement for the summer interns, who started their program yesterday June 30, 2008 at the International Institute of Islamic Thought. Ten interns from different fields of study met with their instructors and IIIT directors for an orientation about IIIT, the program, and a briefing about the course.
Some of the visiting instructors present were Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, President of the Minaret of Freedom Institute, Dr. ElTigani Hamid, Associate Professor at Sheikh Zaid University, UAE, Dr. Asaad Busool, President of the Islamic College in Chicago, Dr. Mohammad Nimer, and Mohammad Mekki. These instructors and others will be teaching Arabic, Islamic History and Civilization, Islamic Movements, Comparative Religion, Organization Leadership, Faith-Based Entrepreneurship, Fiqh, Quran, and Hadith. Some courses will be taught by resident instructors such as Dr. Iqbal Unus and Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza.
After the briefing each student was given an Arabic placement test to check his/her level. Following the delicious lunch with IIIT directors and staff and some of the instructors, the interns headed to their first lecture of the day, Quranic studies. |

 A delegation from the IIIT Headquarters in Washington visited the Paris office between May 25 and 30, 2008. The delegation was joined by Dr. Anas al Shaikh Ali, Director of the London office. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the IIIT college in France, establish the Council of Scholars for IIIT France, and to discuss the 2008 and 2009 academic activities. They met with the staff, members of the local Council of Scholars and several students of the college. They discussed the space requirements, the budget, and future plans of expansion with the Director, the staff and the professors. |

The International Islamic Charitable Organization of Kuwait (IICO) held its general Assembly meeting on the 13th of May 2008. Seven directors and Academic Advisors from IIIT attended and Dr. Barzinji delivered the Delegates Address to the General Assembly. |

A dear and respected friend of IIIT, an impeccable gentleman, and a top-notch scholar, Professor Louis Cantori passed away earlier this week at his home, surrounded by his wife of 50 years, Joan Cantori, and their sons and daughter. Professor Cantori's last academic appointment was as professor of political science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Eight prominent religious leaders from Egypt representing eight different religious sects visited IIIT on May 6, 2008. The delegation came to the US as part of the State Department International Visitor Program entitled "Religion and Society: A Dialogue" with the purpose of promoting mutual understanding of the role of religion in society, the relationship of church and State, the American Muslim community, its institutions, and the status of other religious groups in the US.

The International Institute of Islamic Thought is sad to announce the passing of prominent Arab-American scholar, Dr. George Atiyeh, who headed the Middle East Section of the Library of Congress for 30 years. He passed away on Monday, April 21, 2008, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. IIIT expresses its deep condolences to Dr. Atiyeh’s family and friends. |
